Building Near the Coast? Your Coating System Matters More Than You Think.

Building Near the Coast? Your Coating System Matters More Than You Think.

Around 80 percent of the population lives within an hour of the coast, and a significant proportion of our building stock sits in environments that test materials hard every single day.

Salt air, humidity, wind-driven moisture, these are not edge-case conditions. They are the normal operating environment for a huge portion of the buildings being designed and built right now. And yet corrosion protection in structural steel is still, too often, an afterthought.

By the time rust is visible, the damage has already been accumulating for years. Corrosion starts at the surface and works inward compromising structural integrity, creating maintenance obligations, and shortening the effective life of a building's primary structure.

In a coastal or high-corrosion environment, the choice of coating system is not a specification detail. It is a decision that determines the long-term performance of everything built on top of it.

A Smarter Approach to Coating

AlloyCoat™ is Formsteel's premium zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy coating system, developed for superior performance across structural beams, roofing, and cladding. Where conventional galvanising relies on zinc alone, AlloyCoat™ combines aluminum and magnesium to form a dense, tightly adherent barrier that significantly outperforms traditional coatings. In salt spray testing, AlloyCoat™ outperforms standard galvanised steel by up to five to ten times. In practical terms, that means the coating continues to perform in the environments where standard coatings begin to fail.

AlloyCoat™ also offers self-healing protection. The magnesium-enriched alloy reacts with moisture to seal scratches and cut edges, restoring protection where damage occurs on site. Exposed edges are typically the first point of failure in any coating system. AlloyCoat™ minimises red rust formation at those edges, significantly extending the life of the product in high-exposure environments.

The coating is applied to both sides of the steel before it leaves the factory, so whether the steel is used in a beam, a roof, or a wall cladding system, the protection is built in from the start.

Better Protection. Better Outcomes.

For a builder working in a coastal environment, AlloyCoat™ changes the maintenance conversation. Structures that would traditionally require periodic inspection and remediation perform at a higher level for longer. That means a lower total cost of ownership for the client, and fewer callbacks and less warranty exposure for you.

For a specifier, AlloyCoat™ gives you a clear, confident answer to the corrosion protection question. When you are specifying for a beachfront development, a marine precinct, or any structure in a high-corrosion zone, you need a coating system you can point to and stand behind. AlloyCoat™ is that system.

It also means a consistent, high-performance finish from the core frame to the facade. Formsteel uses AlloyCoat™ across its beam systems and external envelope products, so the same protection standard applies to the structure and the building skin. That is not something most coating systems can offer.

Specified for the Long Term.

New Zealand has a significant legacy of coastal buildings that were not specified with long-term corrosion performance in mind. Remediation is expensive, disruptive, and too often deferred until the problem is serious. For new builds in corrosive environments  AlloyCoat™ sets a higher baseline, one measured not just in test results, but in fewer site callbacks, lower maintenance costs, and structures that still look and perform the way they should decades down the track.

Every Formsteel structure carries a 50-year structural and surface guarantee. That guarantee is backed by a coating system engineered to earn it.

A 50-year frame needs a coating system that is up to the job. In coastal New Zealand, AlloyCoat™ is that system.
